The Legio IV Italica was one of the most famous Roman legions of the imperial age, created by Emperor Marcus Aurelius in 168 AD, at a crucial moment for the defense of the Danubian borders. Its name, "Italica", recalls its Italian origins and its strong ties to Rome's military tradition. Initially sent against the threats of the Marcomanni and Germanic peoples, the legion distinguished itself through its discipline, maneuverability, and resilience in difficult campaigns.
It was subsequently stationed permanently in the province of Moesia Inferior, with its base in Noviodunum, where it played a fundamental role in controlling the Danubian limes. Throughout the 3rd and 4th centuries, the IV Italica continued to serve the Empire, adapting to changes in the Roman army and participating in the defense of the eastern frontiers. Its history bears witness to the strength, continuity, and prestige of the Roman legions, the quintessential symbol of Rome's expansion and endurance.
