The artwork
The Leda by Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, is one of the high points of Italian Renaissance mythological painting. The work depicts the myth of Leda and the swan with an extraordinary fusion of sensuality, grace and movement. The female figure, captured in a natural and dynamic pose, is modelled by a soft light that enhances the delicacy of the skin and the fluidity of the forms.
Correggio shows a unique mastery in rendering the vitality of the bodies and the emotional intensity of the scene, avoiding all formal rigidity. The warm, harmonious colours help create an intimate, refined atmosphere, while the sinuous composition guides the eye naturally. Leda is one of the most modern interpretations of the classical myth, in which painterly elegance and expressive freedom merge in a vision of great allure and evocative power.
