The artwork
A white cat sits on the windowsill and looks out towards the ricefields and Mount Fuji, coloured by the sunset. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- The white cat, the sky shading from blue to red and the outline of Fuji behind the window lattice.
- An intimate, charming picture, perfect in a bedroom or a study.
- A gift for anyone who loves cats and Japan.
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), the best loved landscape artist of Japan, published it in 1857 in the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, the series devoted to the city we now call Tokyo. The room is on the upper floor of a house in the Yoshiwara, the entertainment district of Edo, on the busiest day of the year: the Torinomachi festival, in the eleventh month. In the distance, beyond the Asakusa ricefields, passes the long procession of worshippers heading for the shrine.
Hiroshige does not show the people in the room. He leaves only a few objects, a towel on the sill and a bowl, and entrusts the whole scene to the cat, who watches the festival in our place. It is one of the best loved images of the series, precisely for this calm. Our reproduction comes from the impression in the Brooklyn Museum in New York.
In a bedroom or a study it is a silent companion. A perfect gift for anyone who loves cats.
