The artwork
Original 18th-century engraving of the prisons of San Marco, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the rectangular, two-story building with a small square in front, adjacent to the Doge's Palace and connected to the Bridge of Sighs. In the small square in front of the Doge's Palace are stalls and scenes of daily life. The sky is partly cloudy.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1740. There are many other variations of this work by Canaletto. The engraving is exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA.
