The artwork
An original engraving of Le Pilier isolé made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, at the base, are a small hillock, a squared column and, further off, the ruin of an architectural structure with an arch. On the left another pyramidal monument can be glimpsed. Shrubs grow on top of the arched ruin, and further in the background a small village can be glimpsed. It is a perspective view in which the column and the architectural ruin lie on a single imaginary axis.
The work is undated. Canaletto created numerous versions of this work.
