The artwork
Painted in 1866, "Le Macchiaiole" depicts peasant women at work in the fields, gathering firewood or carrying out other farm tasks. The scene is set in a landscape typical of the Tuscan Maremma, characterised by harsh, wild nature. The figures are rendered in a concise, almost sketched manner, aiming to capture the overall impression rather than minute detail. The volumes are conveyed through strong contrasts of light and shade, and light plays a fundamental role in defining spaces and forms.
In this work, Fattori shows deep respect for the dignity of labour and for the toil of the women depicted. The painting conveys a sense of calm and harmony between man and nature, despite the hardship of life that shows in the faces and postures of the figures.
