The artwork
Las Meninas, 1957 by Pablo Picasso has extraordinary visual force: it enters a space with energy, intelligence and a creative tension that is felt at once. The figures seem to explode within the composition, amid sharp contrasts, broken rhythms and a structure that makes the image alive, magnetic and impossible to ignore. It is a perfect work for those who love Picasso at his most cultured and powerful, able to converse with the great tradition and at the same time transform it into something radically new.
Las Meninas belongs to the celebrated cycle of 58 paintings and studies that Picasso devoted to Velázquez's masterpiece. The entire cycle was donated by the artist to the Barcelona museum in 1968, partly in memory of his friend and secretary Jaime Sabartés.
