The painting, characterised by a fairy-tale atmosphere and a vivid stag-hunting scene, probably entered the Borghese Collection in 1608. It arrived through a dispatch of works from Ferrara, handled by Enzo Bentivoglio on behalf of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, following the stripping of the alabaster chambers of the Este Castle.
