The painting "The Lady in a Wood" is a significant example of Fattori's sensitivity to landscape and to the human figure within it. Although Fattori is famous for his military scenes and views of the Maremma, his output also includes portraits and scenes of bourgeois life outdoors. In this work, the female figure is an intimate, discreet presence, immersed in nature.
Attention is in fact centred on the atmospheric rendering of the wood, on the light filtering through the trees and on the relationship between the figure and her surroundings. Indeed, the painting reflects the Macchiaioli's interest in depicting reality unfiltered, with particular attention to the lighting effects obtained by juxtaposing different tones of colour.
