The artwork

For decades nobody truly saw the light of this painting: a yellowed varnish covered it, and the restoration Tate carried out for the 2027 exhibition has brought it back. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • The cliffs along the Seine in the morning mist, mirrored in the water.
  • Silver, grey and blue, a calm light for a bedroom or a living room.
  • A gift for anyone who loves rivers and quiet mornings.

Port-Villez is a village on the Seine between Vernon and Bonnières, a few kilometres from Giverny, where Monet lived, and it is known for the cliffs that line the river. In 1894 Monet painted a series of views there, probably from a boat. Here the cliffs are wrapped in morning mist, without detail, and are reflected in the water with perfect symmetry.

Tate in London bought the painting in 1953. Over the years the protective varnish laid over the paint had yellowed, veiling the silver tones like dirty glass. For Monet: Painting Time, the first exhibition Tate Modern in London has devoted to Monet (25 February to 27 June 2027), the conservators removed it. The curator Genevieve Barton explained that this has revealed again the luminosity Monet intended, hidden for decades.

In a bedroom or a quiet living room it brings the stillness of a river in the morning mist. It is a gift for anyone who loves spending time by the water.
