The artwork
The House with the Palm Tree (La maison du palmier) is a work by Joan Miró made in 1918, during the artist's formative period. The painting depicts a house set in the rural Catalan landscape, dominated by a palm tree, a natural element charged with symbolic value. The style is still figurative, but already marked by a strong simplification of forms, bold outlines and a careful construction of space.
The work reflects the influence of Post-Impressionism, of Cézanne and of the Fauvism, visible in the use of colour and the solidity of the structures. At the same time it anticipates Miró's interest in nature as a poetic and mental space. The House with the Palm Tree represents a fundamental step towards the maturing of his language, laying the foundations for his later symbolic and Surrealist development.
