Julius Caesar by Peter Paul Rubens (1626) is an imposing depiction of the famous Roman general, part of the series of portraits of the great men of history created for the palace of King Philip IV of Spain. Rubens presents Caesar as a vigorous, wise and majestic man, with an almost divine aura. He wears richly decorated armour and a red cloak, symbols of imperial power and military command. His steady, penetrating gaze expresses determination and intelligence, while the classical composition and the sculptural modelling of the face recall ancient art, blending idealisation and realism.
The work reflects the Baroque taste for grandeur and drama, but also the humanism that pervades Rubens's art. The Flemish painter creates an icon of Roman power and virtue, emphasising the figure of Caesar as an example of leadership and glory. The warm light that caresses the face and the armour accentuates the sculptural relief of the figure, giving it a sense of immortality.
