Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi, created around 1620, is one of the most intense and dramatic masterpieces of the Italian Baroque. The work depicts the biblical heroine Judith at the moment when, with extraordinary determination, she beheads the Assyrian general Holofernes to save her people. Artemisia, one of the first women painters to establish herself in an art world dominated by men, turns the subject into a powerful affirmation of female strength and justice.
Inspired by Caravaggesque naturalism, the scene is built on a strong contrast of light and shadow, warm colours and a raw realism that heightens the physical and psychological tension. Judith’s resolute gesture and the help of her maidservant Abra highlight the solidarity and courage of women. Held at the Uffizi, Florence, the painting is a symbol of the determination, pain and resilience that marked the life and art of Artemisia Gentileschi.
