The artwork
Artemisia Gentileschi's Judith Beheading Holofernes, painted around 1620, is one of the most intense and dramatic masterpieces of the Italian Baroque. The work depicts the biblical heroine Judith as, with extraordinary determination, she beheads the Assyrian general Holofernes to save her people. Artemisia, one of the first female painters to establish herself in a male-dominated art world, transforms the subject into a powerful affirmation of feminine strength and justice.
Inspired by Caravaggio's naturalism, the scene is constructed with strong contrasts of light and shadow, warm colors, and a stark realism that accentuates the physical and psychological tension. Judith's decisive gesture and the cooperation of her servant Abràh highlight the solidarity and courage of the women. Housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the painting symbolizes the determination, pain, and resilience that characterized Artemisia Gentileschi's life and art.
