The artwork

"Judith and Her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes" by Andrea Mantegna depicts the heroic biblical widow who saves her people by beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes. Judith, focused and determined, is accompanied by her maidservant, who helps her hide the severed head.

Mantegna uses close-up perspective and realistic anatomical detail to heighten the drama of the scene. The contrast between the elegant fabrics and the raw blood emphasises the realism. The intense expressions and theatrical composition guide the viewer's eye, turning a biblical story into a powerful symbol of courage, feminine cunning and divine justice.
