The artwork
An original and rare painting by Bernardo Bellotto depicting the entry of a conquering army into Rome. It dates back to the time of Urban VII and is dated 1779. The invading army is led by Jerzy Ossolinski, emissary of Wladyslaw IV, King of Poland. The large crowd of people and horses in St. Peter's Square is prominent. The invasion is fully taking place, the day is clear, and luck seems to be on the the conquerors' side. Another version of this work exists.
