The artwork
An original and rare painting by Bernardo Bellotto depicting the entry of a conquering army into Rome. It's the time of Urban VII, and the painting is dated 1779. The invading army is led by Jerzy Ossolinski, emissary of Wladyslaw IV, King of Poland. The large crowd of people and horses in St. Peter's Square is prominent. It is the height of the invasion, the day is clear, and fortune seems to smile to the conquerors.
The painting is exhibited at the National Museum in Wroclaw, Poland.
