Jas de Bouffan, the Pool depicts one of the most intimate and recurring places in Paul Cézanne's artistic life: the family estate near Aix-en-Provence. The painting shows the garden pool as a silent, suspended place, immersed in a nature ordered and constructed through colour.
The surfaces of the water, walls and trees are rendered with compact, geometric brushstrokes that transform the landscape into a solid, considered structure. The light is not descriptive but analytical, used to model volumes and create a balance between solids and voids. In this work Cézanne does not seek anecdote, but a deep reflection on space and form, anticipating the explorations that would lead to modern painting and Cubism.
