The work depicts a rural landscape near Pontoise, where Pissarro lived for many years and found constant inspiration. In this view, the hill stretches gently beneath a wide sky, with paths, scattered houses and human figures that seem almost to merge with their surroundings. The scene is dominated by a natural light that makes the greens of the fields and the earthy tones of the hill vibrant, foreshadowing the sensitivity to light that would be central to Impressionist painting.
The composition is balanced and meditative, with a slightly raised viewpoint that captures the vastness of the landscape.
