The artwork
An original and luminous eighteenth-century depiction of an island in the lagoon, created by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, with pen, ink, and watercolor on paper. We are in the Venetian lagoon, and the artist depicts a farmhouse in the foreground, with a small church in the background, not far away to the right. One detail is the dock leading to the farmhouse, which is surrounded by walls to prevent high water from entering. Meanwhile, on the left, further into the background, another island, Venice, can be glimpsed. Even further away, the lagoon meets the sky, blending into a single, nuanced color.
The engraving is undated. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist, and are exhibited at the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, UK.
