The artwork
The artwork Interior, painted by Mark Rothko in 1936, belongs to the Expressionist movement and can be described as an example of the “Interior” genre. It is currently kept in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
In the painting, Rothko depicts a vast, imposing architectural space, full of columns and dominated by intense tones of red and green. At the centre, above the entrance, stands a framed figure, almost serving as a focal point. Three human figures are depicted at the bottom centre, wrapped in shadow, contrasting sharply with the brightness of the surrounding architectural elements. The stylisation of the columns and walls gives the scene a sense of grandeur and deep historicity. The figures seem almost to vanish before the majesty of the structure, highlighting the contrast between man and his surroundings. This play of scale and light helps to create a solemn, almost theatrical atmosphere. Interior captures a moment of silent contemplation within an almost unreal world, offering a glimpse that anticipates Rothko's future explorations of emotional and symbolic depth, before his style evolved towards pure abstraction.
