The artwork
"Insula Dulcamara," painted by Paul Klee in 1938, is one of his most significant works from his late period, created while he was battling scleroderma. Housed at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, the work reflects the fragility of the body through a dense and experimental visual language. The support—newspaper on jute canvas—alludes to the passing of time, with printed texts emerging beneath the paint like traces of memory.
The mixed technique of collage, graffiti, and paint, with a plaster base, creates tactile and material surfaces. The ship, a recurring theme in Klee's late works, suggests an inner journey or a farewell. A testamentary work, Insula Dulcamara intertwines autobiography and myth, demonstrating how suffering can transform into a poetics of resistance.
