The artwork

Improvisation 27 (Garden of Love) (Improvisation 27 (Garden of Love)) is a oil on canvas painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1912, a period of peak expression of his Lyrical Abstraction and shortly after the founding of the group Der Blaue Reiter.

This painting is one of the most mature examples of the series of Improvisations, which Kandinsky defined as expressions of emotions and moods that are spontaneous and unconscious. Although it is a predominantly abstract work, it still retains traces of figurative elements, hence the unofficial subtitle Garden of Love.

The canvas is an explosion of pure colour applied with energetic, free brushstrokes. Dominating are patches of bright red, yellow and blue, intersected by dynamic black lines that do not define outlines but create rhythm and tension. The abstract elements suggest the shapes of cups, serpents and human figures, recalling the theme of Eden, sin and desire.
