The artwork
A romantic and original 18th-century imaginary view of Padua outside the walls, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, etched on paper. The drawing shows Padua from afar, with a winding road leading to a city gate (probably Porta Portello). The gate is linked by a bridge over the Piovego river. Further away, the bell towers and domes of the Santo and of the church of Santa Giustina can be made out. The sky above has a few clouds. The picture is dated 1741; Canaletto made other variants of this work.
