The artwork
Monet signed the painting at lower left with the date 1903, yet he had not been back to London since 1901: he finished this bridge from memory, in his studio in France. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- The four low arches of the bridge, the traffic on top, the pink smoke and the chimneys on the far bank.
- Delicate greys, blues and pinks, elegant in a bright room.
- A gift for anyone who loves cities on the water.
Monet spent three winters in London between 1899 and 1901, and from the Savoy Hotel he painted Waterloo Bridge at every hour of the day. Each view began from life, in front of the river. But the light changed constantly, and to keep up with it Monet worked on many canvases at once, completing them with memory and invention.
In the end he took the canvases back to Giverny, the village in Normandy where he lived, and there he took them up again, moving from one to another to bring them into harmony as a single work. That is why some of them, like this one, bear a date later than his last trip.
In 1904 the Paris dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who sold Monet's paintings, sold it to a collector in Pittsburgh, in the United States. Today it is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Hung in a hallway or above a desk, it brings a piece of London in a soft light. It is a gift for anyone who remembers a grey day on the Thames.
