The artwork

Monet planted a garden wherever he lived: at Vétheuil, on the Seine, he agreed with his landlord to lay out the terraces running down to the river, and here the sunflowers grow taller than the people. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • Sunflowers on both sides of the path, the large blue and white pots and a child with his little cart.
  • Sunny yellows and greens for a wall that needs light.
  • A gift for anyone who loves gardens and flowers.

In 1878 Monet had moved to Vétheuil, a village north-west of Paris, into a house with a terraced garden above the Seine. With him were his wife Camille, their two sons and the family of Ernest Hoschedé, a businessman and art collector ruined by debts, with his wife Alice and their six children. Camille died the following year, and the two families stayed together.

The boy with the cart is Monet's youngest son; the other figures on the steps are members of that extended household. The large pots belonged to Monet, who took them with him every time he moved, to use in his later gardens. Up close you can see that they are blue and green where they reflect the grass, and elsewhere tinged with gold or pink. The original is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

In a hallway or a bright kitchen it brings a summer in bloom. It is a gift for anyone who has a garden, or who dreams of one.
