The artwork
The dark trunk of an old plum tree crosses the whole scene, and behind its flowering branches a sky opens up, red as a sunset. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- A sky fading from red to white, the white plum blossoms and the green of the lawn.
- A picture with intense colours that warms up a living room or a study.
- A gift for anyone who loves Japan and the painting of Van Gogh.
It belongs to the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, the series of prints that Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), the best loved landscape artist of Japan, published between 1856 and 1858 with the publisher Uoya Eikichi. Edo was the name of Tokyo until 1868. The plum garden at Kameido, on the eastern edge of the city, was where people went on outings at the end of winter, when the plum trees blossom, before the cherries. Hiroshige puts the trunk in the foreground, cut off by the edges of the sheet, and leaves the visitors far away behind the fence: this way he brings us into the garden as if we were there.
In 1887 the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, who collected Japanese prints, copied this one in oils; his picture is now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Our reproduction comes from the impression in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, printed in 1857.
In a living room or an entrance hall it brings a blossom that lasts all year. It is a precious gift for anyone who loves Japanese art.
