The artwork

Claude Monet's painting “The Ice at Vétheuil”, made in 1880, captures a moment of the harsh winter that struck the Vétheuil region in France. That year the Seine, which flowed near Monet's house, froze completely, blocking river traffic and isolating communities. This exceptional weather event became the subject of a series of works by the artist.

The picture shows the surface of the river covered with sheets of ice and fragments of snow, with dull reflections of the winter light. The composition conveys the stillness and immobility of a landscape locked in frost. There is none of the brilliance or chromatic vivacity of many of his later works, but rather a sober rendering of the cold tones and greyish nuances that dominate the scene.
