The artwork
Behind the glass of the French window Camille, Monet's wife, passes through the snow with a red kerchief over her head and turns to look into the house. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- Camille seen through the panes, the white curtains on either side and the snow in the garden.
- Wintry greys and whites with a single touch of red: a picture that catches the eye at once.
- A gift for someone you love.
Camille Doncieux had been the model for many of Monet's paintings before she became his wife in 1870. Here we are in their house at Argenteuil, just outside Paris, on a snowy day. She is outside in the garden, passing the French window: Monet catches her in an instant, as her glance crosses the glass.
Her face is made of a few touches of colour, quickly applied; the snow and the trees are broad, broken strokes of pure white and green. Everything else is grey and silent, and the eye goes straight to the red of the kerchief.
Camille died young, in 1879. This painting was very dear to Monet, who kept it with him all his life. The original is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, in the United States.
In a bedroom or a study it brings the intimacy of a snowy day seen from inside the house. It is a gift for someone you love, or for anyone who treasures family memories.
