Bright and interesting view of the stairways of a palace in Platonic-Greek style, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. The imposing staircase dominates the scene; symbolically, climbing it represents elevation for the citizen. Above the staircase there is a classical room with statues and a fine colonnade. People of all social classes are ascending and descending the stairs: the common citizen, the merchant, the nobleman, and the clergyman. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1762.
The painting is exhibited at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany.
