The artwork

On a panel just over seventy centimetres wide, Pontormo fitted an entire army, with dozens of bodies in motion. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • A crowded scene of soldiers, executioners and martyrs, full of detail.
  • A painting to look at up close, ideal in a study or a library.
  • A gift for anyone who loves Florentine painting and the stories of the saints.

According to legend, ten thousand Roman soldiers converted to Christianity and for this were killed and crucified on Mount Ararat, in Armenia. Pontormo painted their story between 1528 and 1530 for the Spedale degli Innocenti, the Florence orphanage.

The result is a scene of bodies in every pose, painted with the precision of a miniature. The Uffizi holds a copy of its left-hand section, attributed to the young Bronzino, who was Pontormo's pupil.

The panel belongs to the Palatine Gallery in Palazzo Pitti and is among the works that came from Florence for the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome.

In a study, in a library, above a desk: it is the painting for anyone who loves discovering a new detail every time.
