This painting, dated to around 1867, is the fruit of the artist's stays at Diego Martelli's estate at Castiglioncello, in Tuscany, between about 1867 and 1875.
Castiglioncello, with its countryside and coastal landscape, became a place of meeting and experimentation for these artists. The villa of Diego Martelli, art critic and patron, was a true "laboratory" where painters such as Fattori, Silvestro Lega and Telemaco Signorini gathered to discuss and paint together.
In the painting "Horses at Pasture", Fattori shows his skill in rendering the luminosity of the Tuscan landscape through a bold use of colour. The grazing horses are rendered with patches of colour that define their forms in an essential way, without resorting to minute detail.
