Homage to a Poet is a painting attributed to Giorgione or to a follower of his Venetian circle, held at the National Gallery in London. The scene is shrouded in mystery and rich in symbolism: at the centre is a figure seated on an ornate throne, flanked by a kneeling man and a young page paying homage. Nearby, a lute player adds a poetic and meditative note. The landscape in the background opens into the distance with hills, hilltop towns and symbolic animals such as the peacock and the leopard, creating a contemplative atmosphere.
The composition unites the depiction of the figures with a sense of visual poetry, typical of Giorgione's style, in which reality and symbol blend harmoniously. The work invites the viewer to reflect on the bond between art, poetry and nature, without providing a linear narrative but leaving room for personal interpretation.
