The artwork

The Holy Family with Saints Elizabeth and John the Baptist by Andrea Mantegna presents a compact group of monumental figures, marked by strong sculptural quality and intense realism. Mary is at the centre with the Child, steady and aware, while Joseph looks on in a meditative attitude. Saint Elizabeth and the young John the Baptist complete the scene, creating a silent dialogue of glances.

The faces are sculpted by light, marked by time and experience, in keeping with Mantegna's taste for antiquity. The sober colours and close-up space reinforce the mood of intimate devotion and profound Renaissance spirituality.
