The artwork
The Heller Altarpiece is a lost oil painting on panel by Albrecht Dürer and Matthias Grünewald, datable to 1507-1509 and destroyed by fire in 1729.
What survives of the work is a copy of the central panel, made in 1615 and now in the Städel in Frankfurt, and the side panels, executed by assistants to the master’s design, at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe.
