The artwork
"Hell" by Hieronymus Bosch, painted at the end of the 15th century, is a visionary work depicting the torments of the damned and the perils of sin. Bosch fills the scene with deformed figures, monstrous creatures and grotesque situations, turning Hell into a moral theatre in which folly, violence and greed meet their punishment. The artist uses meticulous detail and allegorical symbols to point to human vices and the consequences of moral corruption.
The intense colours and strong contrasts heighten the unsettling atmosphere, while the complex composition guides the viewer's eye through different episodes, from physical to psychological torments. The work is not only a depiction of pain and suffering, but also a moral warning, inviting reflection on virtue, faith and human choices. Bosch combines imagination, allegory and social criticism in a timeless masterpiece.
