La Scapigliata, or Head of a Woman, is a work attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, made between about 1504 and 1508. Held in the Galleria Nazionale in Parma, it depicts the face of a young woman with loose, dishevelled hair, from which the title derives. The unfinished painting is executed on panel in a mixed technique of oil and earth, which lends the figure an ethereal and mysterious aura. The lowered gaze and the faint smile recall the enigmatic sweetness of the Mona Lisa.
Here Leonardo explores feminine grace and natural beauty through soft lines and delicate chiaroscuro. The work embodies Leonardo's poetics of the “non finito”, extolling inner expression over formal perfection. La Scapigliata represents one of the most refined testimonies to Leonardo da Vinci's psychological sensitivity and technical mastery.
