The artwork
Hammamet with Its Mosque is a 1914 painting by Paul Klee, made after the journey to Tunisia that profoundly shaped his poetics. The work depicts the town of Hammamet through a simplified, lyrical vision in which architecture and landscape dissolve into geometric areas of colour.
The mosque emerges as a symbolic element, integrated into a rhythmic composition of warm, luminous colours. Klee does not describe reality realistically but transfigures it into an abstract, musical language, in which colour becomes an autonomous means of expression, able to evoke light, spirituality and inner harmony.
