The artwork
Guernica by Picasso is one of the most powerful images ever created against war: an explosion of pain, chaos and anguish that overwhelms the viewer from the very first moment. The broken figures, the screaming faces and the stark black and white turn the scene into an immense visual presence, capable of giving any room an extraordinary dramatic force and emotional depth.
Created in 1937 for the Spanish pavilion at the Paris World Exhibition, Guernica was conceived as a response to the bombing of the Basque town on 26 April 1937 and is now held at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. Picasso worked on the painting in just a few weeks, preceded by numerous preparatory studies, choosing a palette of white, black and greys that amplifies the sense of tragedy and also recalls the visual impact of war photographs. A key fact is that the painting remained for decades at MoMA in New York and returned to Spain only after the end of Francoism, in line with the wishes expressed by Picasso himself.
