The artwork
In Grey is a significant oil painting completed by Wassily Kandinsky in 1919 during his stay in Moscow after the Revolution. The work is considered a turning point, marking the end of his "dramatic" period and the start of a more structured and introspective phase that foreshadows his work at the Bauhaus.
The canvas stands out for its muted palette, dominated by shades of grey, brown and pale blue, which lend it a meditative, controlled atmosphere. The composition is a dense and complex constellation of abstract forms – triangles, curves, broken lines – that seem to float in a neutral space.
Unlike the emotional and chromatic explosion of earlier works such as the "Improvisations", "In Grey" shows a more restrained dynamism and a greater emphasis on geometric balance. The artist transforms the initial organic forms (such as a boat) into an intricate visual mechanism that conveys a sense of cosmic stillness and reflection on the inner structure of pure art.
