The artwork
Green and Maroon by Mark Rothko is an emblematic painting of Abstract Expressionism, in which the artist investigates the emotional power of colour through essential, suspended forms. The work presents two large fields of colour, a deep green and a maroon-purple, which seem to float on a soft background.
The surfaces are not flat: the soft, layered brushstrokes generate luminous vibrations, creating a meditative atmosphere. Rothko avoids any figurative reference in order to focus the viewer's gaze on the spiritual dimension of colour, seeking a direct and almost silent communication. The tones, though contrasting, establish an intimate dialogue, suggesting balance, melancholy and introspection.
