Original 18th-century view of the Grand Canal with Palazzo Balbi, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the Grand Canal, illuminated by a distinctive sunset light, and traversed by boats of various kinds. On the sides of the canal there are Venetian palaces, including Palazzo Balbi. The sky is threatening, with dark clouds on the left side, while white clouds loom further in the background.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1724. Canaletto painted many variations of this painting. The work is exhibited at the Ca' Rezzonico, Museo del Settecento museum in Venice.
