The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century painting of the Grand Canal with a view to the north, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, bustling with boats, surrounded by beautiful Venetian palaces. Canaletto painted the canal water with shades of blue-green, taking on a color similar to that of the sky. The left side of the painting shows the Venetian palaces in the shade, while those on the opposite side are illuminated by the morning sun. The sky is cloudy, but the sun breaks through the clouds, lending a unique light to the entire painting.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1725. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
