Original and rare 18th-century painting of the Rialto Bridge, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, bustling with boats, surrounded by beautiful Venetian palaces. Canaletto paints the canal water with shades of blue-green, taking on a color similar to that of the sky. Further in the background is the covered Rialto Bridge, with its shops, a focal point for Venetians, just as a shopping center today was in its day. The sky is clear, tinged with pale blue and light pink, with a few clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1707. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
