An original and rare 18th-century painting of the Rialto Bridge, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, busy with boats, surrounded by fine Venetian palazzi. Canaletto paints the water of the canal in shades of blue-green, taking on a colour similar to that of the sky. Further back is the covered Rialto Bridge with its shops, a landmark for Venetians: just as a shopping centre might be today, so was the Rialto Bridge in its time. The sky is clear, shaded in light blue and pale pink with a few clouds. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1707. Canaletto produced other versions of this work.
