The artwork
Original 18th-century view of the Grand Canal, with a unique use of light, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the Grand Canal, with freight boats gathered together and others navigating. The canal water is brightly lit on the left side of the painting, almost taking on a light brown hue, while on the opposite side it takes on the usual light green-blue hue. Beyond the canal bank there are Venetian palaces, arranged side by side and in shadow. The sky is cloudy, with leaden clouds depicted on the entire painting.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1725. Two other versions of this painting by Canaletto exist.
