Original 18th-century view of the Grand Canal, in threatening weather, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the Grand Canal, illuminated by the distinctive light of a sun breaking through clouds laden with water, and traversed by boats of various kinds. On the sides of the canal there are Venetian palaces, one next to the other; those on the left are in the shadow, while those on the right are exposed to the sun. The sky is cloudy, with dark clouds draping the entire painting.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1726. Many variations of this painting exist, painted by Canaletto.
