A rare and original 18th-century view of the Grand Canal in Venice, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. Prominent is the canal, busy with boats of various sizes, with a striking pale green-blue colour to the water. Along the sides of the canal stand fine Venetian palaces, side by side. On the left the palaces are lit by the sun, while on the right they are in shadow. The sky is heavily overcast, with threatening clouds on the horizon. The sky in the foreground is black, fading to white in the background, giving a special light to the whole picture.
The work is dated 1726; other variants of this painting by Canaletto exist.
