In the grandiose depiction of the Last Judgment, painted on the counter façade of the chapel, stupendous pictorial passages coexist, supported by a very high visionary mystical concentration, with authentic pieces of skill, of naturalism characterized by an extraordinary physical and material concreteness. If, certainly, Giotto does not subvert the traditional iconographic canons on which this depiction so dear to the imagination of medieval man is based, he nevertheless proposes a version of it for the first time on a substantial visual unity. In the figure of Enrico Scrovegni who, at the base of the fresco, presents the model of the building to the Virgin flanked by two saints as a sign of offering, Giotto probably creates the first true portrait of modern Western painting, of a man depicted in same proportions as the sacred figures in front of whom he kneels.
