The Last Judgment is the final scene of the entire Scrovegni Chapel. The absolute protagonist is Christ , painted directly by Giotto's hand, which divides the whole scene into two perfectly distinct parts. On the right, those who were saved , flooded with a benevolent light, and grouped in orderly ranks of the blessed, accompanied by Peter, James, John, Philip, Simon and Thomas. On the left , in confusion and horror, the damned are thrown. It is the kingdom of Lucifer, where we glimpse a hanged Judas Iscariot. In the fresco we find two characteristic elements: below, the scene of the offering, where Enrico Scrovegni, who commissioned the entire work, delivers the entire Chapel to the Madonna as a gift. The area in which this detail is painted is not accidental: every March 25th, the day of the consecration of the Chapel, a ray of light reflects on the fresco and illuminates the hands of Enrico and the Madonna. Finally, the fourth person in the foreground in the group of the blessed is recognizable as a self-portrait of Giotto, who wanted to participate in the great scene of the Judgement.
