The artwork
Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh, painted in August 1888 in Arles, is one of the most famous and iconic cycles in the history of art. The artist made several versions of the subject, depicting sunflowers in a vase in intense, vibrant shades of yellow. Through his masterly use of colour and paint, Van Gogh turned a simple bunch of flowers into an explosion of light and life. Sunflowers, symbols of friendship, gratitude and hope, reflect the artist’s state of mind during his period of enthusiasm for creating the “Yellow House”, where he dreamed of founding a community of painters together with Gauguin.
The work expresses a profound spirituality and a sense of vitality that transcends reality, making every brushstroke a mark of inner energy. Sunflowers are today a universal emblem of Van Gogh’s beauty, light and emotional intensity.
