The artwork

Her earrings are shaped like tiny bunches of grapes: one of the details through which the painter told the grace of this young woman. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • The young face, the large dark eyes, the gathered hair and the dark tunic.
  • A delicate portrait that brings warmth to a bedroom or a sitting room.
  • A gift for a young woman or for someone dear.

She lived in Egypt between AD 130 and 150, in the years of the emperors Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, when the country was a province of Rome and Egyptians, Greeks and Romans lived side by side in its cities. When she died her body was mummified and this portrait, painted in encaustic, colours mixed with wax, on a thin lime wood panel, was placed over her face among the bandages. It is one of the portraits we call Fayum portraits, after the region of Egypt where many were found.

The painter dressed her with care: a dark tunic with vertical stripes, a mantle, her hair drawn back and those cluster earrings shining beside her face. The panel has long belonged to the collections of the Louvre in Paris, which dates it from the style of the painting.

In a bedroom it brings home the serious and gentle gaze of a girl of almost nineteen centuries ago. It is a delicate gift for someone dear.
